GD Kelly Klapstein ~ Featured January Projects

When I received my ScrapThat! January kit, I couldn't wait to get into my studio! The beautiful Powder Mountain collection from Bo Bunny is one of my favorites this winter.  And there were so many wonderful embellishments that worked perfectly with all my photos and page ideas.

For the first two layouts, I scrapped some older photos of my children.  I love these pics of my kids when they were younger and spent many hours outside in winter time, not feeling cold, but enjoying playing in the snow.  They built forts, made snowmen and even happily shoveled the driveway!

Check out this fun bottle cap in the kit that I used as a journaling spot...

I used a new Tim Holtz/Sizzix die "Snowflake Rosette" to cut out this snowflake from the Bo Bunny double dot card stock in the kit.  Then I topped it with a white snowflake button and bling from the Embellishment Add-On kit...

There were so many pretty ribbons included!  I used the silver one behind my punched border for a subtle glittery effect...
The other blue border above is a sticker from a 12x12 Bo Bunny card stock sticker sheet in the Powder Mountain collection.  I added some blue gems to this sticker....lots of gorgeous bling in this kit too!

The title "Ice Cold Winter" is cut from a Powder Mountain patterned paper that has cool wintery word art...

...and is backed onto a wide knit ribbon in the kit, which I stiffened with white acrylic paint, hoping for a frosty effect.
I also used more blue gems from the kit to bring some sparkle to the title.

Here is my second layout, with photos of my older daughter shoveling the driveway a few years ago. [I think this is the last time I've seen a shovel in her hand...2007! ha ha!]

I also used lots of card stock stickers from that awesome Powder Mountain sticker sheet on this layout.  The title "Snow Bunny" are alphabet stickers on circles cut from one of the pieces of patterned paper.

I think I used almost ALL of the snowflake stickers from that sheet!  The title is layered on top of the largest snowflake sticker, and I used the other ones with these pretty white organza flower brads...

Even my journaling tag has a snowflake sticker and brad!
i

I cut out the snowman from the white woodgrain patterned paper and added some gem eyes, pearl buttons, a charm and a ribbon scarf. I loved all the variety of bling in this kit!

These 3 snowflakes were a happy accident.  I used the kit's white card stock to punch out some snowflakes for the third layout (coming up), and decided to use it as part of my background for this page.  I put a strip of navy card stock behind the punched out images and added pearl centers.

For my last layout, I decided to use all the pretty floral embellishments to create a winter scene with my youngest daughter's photo, taken during our first blizzard last November.  Amarylis's January sketch was inspirational!

The Bo Bunny papers have images on them that are easy to cut out and use as page elements. I cut out the birch trees and birdhouses from a different piece of paper and popped them up in the bottom corners on this page.
I added glitter along the top edges of the bird houses.  These white snowflakes were punched with a Stampin' Up! punch from the white card stock in the kit (as mentioned in my second layout above).  The gem centres give them pretty yet subtle sparkle.

The most beautiful cream rose is in the kit, along with a number of pretty leaves.  I painted the leaves white and sprinkled them with glitter while the paint was still wet.  The lovely tiny string of blue pearls are swirled and layered under the rose for an extra touch of elegance.

I used these pretty golden pearl flourishes as my photo corners...

The page element that is the main feature is the frosty winter window, which is simply made with a piece of card board included in the kit, plastic packaging, white paint and glitter.  My full tutorial for this window appeared earlier this week on this blog.  Click HERE to check it out.

Isn't that bird cute?  It reminds me of the blue jays that we still see sometimes here in the winter.  Their bright blue colours are stunning against the winter whiteness.  I cut this one freehand, using the other bird images in these patterned papers as a guide.

Working with the January ScrapThat! kit was a delight, and I loved creating with all the fabulous products!  Being Guest Designer this month has been a wonderful way to start off a new year of scrapbooking!

How I did that..... by Sandi Smith

Hi everyone....Sandi S here today to share a couple of techniques that I used while creating with the very beautiful January ScrapThat! Kit. Every month I just create with those kits and never know where its going and never take pictures as I go.Then I sit here wondering what to share....

OK...first off I thought I would share the technique I used on the tree chippie to try and make it match the trees in my photo. I have no pictures to accompany the step by step process but it is quite simple.

  • First I sprayed the raw chippie with a couple colors of green Glimmer mist.
  • While it was still damp, I started to gently peel the layers of the chippie toward the center to give it more layers.
  • I then applied Martha Stewart texture paste along the tops of the boughs to create a snow effect. I also applied Donna Salazer Fairy dust glitter for some shimmer.
To make my picture blend into the background I first applied molding paste onto a snowflake mask and then applied blue Glimmermist while still wet. I allowed that to dry and then added the Martha Stewart Texture paste again along the top of my photo and extending out onto the background. It's hard to tell from the photo but I added some clear micro beads into the paste while still wet along with the glitter...you can never have too much sparkle in a winter layout.

My next little technique shows how you can add a few little extra details to your pages.
I wanted to dress up the little snowman in the corner and this is easily done by using embellies from the kit.
  • I first traced around the snowman with a fine tip black marker to make Frosty a little more defined.
  • Using the Bo Bunny Bling, I decorated the hat and added a couple of gemstones to his eyes.
  • Using the fibers in the kit, I made a scarf and then glued on top of the original scarf.
  • I then added a little texture paste to the hat and scarf to give the illusion of snow.
Well that's it for me...I hope I didn't bore you!
Have a great week!
Sandi

January Kit Creations with Sarah R.

Sarah here to share with you my creations with the gorgeous January Kit! I just loved this paper collection by Bo Bunny - so perfect for Winter photos of my sweet little guy!

~ First Snow ~
Main Kit, EAO, FAO
Based on the January Sketch
For this layout - I offset the sketch and used a lot of elements from the Bo Bunny sticker sheet. I added in some rhinestones from the Embellishment Add-on and the Prima floral vine from the Flower Add-on.

~1 Yr ~
Main Kit Only
This layout features a postage stamp background (see my tutorial for this right here in a couple of days) and lots of punchwork and die-cut elements. I actually tore apart an old page that I never really loved to get the photo and snowflake elements for this layout. I then redesigned the page using the gorgeous papers, corrugated cardboard and fabulous knit ribbon from the Main Kit. I added a doily and tag from my stash.

~ Snowflake Rosettes ~
Main Kit, EAO, PAO
These snowflake rosettes were inspired by a tutorial I found on Pinterest. I just love the pompom ribbon from the Main Kit that I used to frame the small medallions in the centre. These will make such pretty decorations in my home each winter!

Corrugated Winter Window Tutorial ~ GD Kelly Klapstein

Hello everyone!

I am so happy to be Guest Designer for January's kit and am excited to share with you today a tutorial on how I made the window in this layout...

"Winter Beauty"
Even though winter can be tooooo long where I live, with lots of snow and cold weather, it is a beautiful sight when those first snowflakes of the season drift down from the sky and whiten the world.

When I design layouts, I often imagine and create scenes with windows, trees and natural elements that help tell the story of the photo.  As soon as I saw the piece of corrugated cardboard in my main kit, the window idea popped into my head...so that is what I did with it!

1. I didn't really trim down the piece in the kit...just cleaned up the edges a bit.

2. I cut rectangles as templates for the panes and traced them.

3. I cut out the panes with my craft knife.
4. I painted the window frame unevenly with white acrylic paint.
5. While the paint was still wet, I sprinkled some glitter over it, here and there.

You know how it is when you give a child a present in a BIG box, and she ends up playing with the box instead of the present? Well, that's how I felt when I was making this window...because next I used the plastic packaging from the embellishments in the kit to make the faux "glass" window panes!

1. First I adhered the plastic to the back of the window frame, and then I trimmed the excess.

2. To make the frosty panes, I put Glossy Accents around the inside edges of the frame.

3. I dumped a lot of glitter on it and it dried very quickly.
Here is a closer look...

It's actually a really simple technique that you could use to make your own window with products you probably already have in your stash!

I hope you enjoyed my tutorial and try it out for yourself!  I'm also looking forward to sharing more details about all my January kit layouts later this week!

LOTW for 1/13/13 **Pam Ellis**

Layout of the Week-1/13/2013
Pam Ellis
"My Beloved"

The ScrapThat! Gallery is full of amazing creations this week! From layouts to tags and gift items and more!
This layout by Pam Ellis just left me breathless, however. From the softly inked colors to the innovative doily masking to that heartwarming picture, this layout is spectacular!

"Do not cry, my beloved child.
When leaves change color and fall to the ground,
and the wind does bite and chill,
thee shalt be seen and comforted.
The days shall shine akin to a new pearl.
Dark skies shall never seek upon your abode.
And I shall always be there."  by Grace Swisher

Here is what Pam shares about her lovely page:

My friend Andrea and her new daughter Ollivia. I did alot of masking and inking on this page. The chipboard is from the Dusty Attic line.

Some of the gallery comments:
So soft.  It has a cloud like appeal.  beautiful.

Snowflake Flower Tutorial with Sandi C

Good morning, scrappers! Sandi C here today with an easy-peasy flower tutorial. This one uses your basic steps of layering together a flower but with the layer being a "snowflake" rather than your typical flower shape.  So for this one, you could use a snowflake punch or use a Die Cutting machine.

Here you can see that I've cut some of the white BoBunny double dot using my Cricut Imagine and my Home Accents cartridge.  I did a variety of sizes starting at 2.5 inches going down to 1.5 inches.  There are tons of snowflake images out there. Just think of all the possibilities for flower making!

Next I did the same thing using one of the blue patterns.

I spritzed the white flakes with some Smooch spray that I had on hand.  In addition to glimmer, that makes them softer and easier to manipulate.

I rolled the "petals" using the end of a fine tip paintbrush.

Then using a round implement such as the cap of a gel pen, I cupped them by placing them in the palm of my hand and pressing downward. You can see the results in the photo below.  You can also accomplish this by placing your flower on a cushy foam surface such as a mouse pad. I just like using the palm of my hand so that I can cup it a bit more.

I then did the same thing with the other color of snowflakes.

Then I started assembling the flower, alternating the layers in color and making sure that the "petals" were rotated rather that being exactly lined up on top of one another. Kaitlyn sent some stamens along with the kit and I've used them here for the center of my flower.

Do you use Puffy paint? I sure do! Not often .. but it does add some character to your flowers. Be sure to let it get almost dry before you use your heat gun to puff up the paint. This first photo shows the flower before using the heat gun ...

and this one shows the flower after using the heat to make the paint puff up. Remember to wait for it to get almost dry first! You can see my butterfly in the photo .. just ignore that .. I took my photo after placing him on my page. =)

Finally, here is how the snowflake flower looks on my layout.

Well, I hope you had fun reading my short tutorial. Can't wait to see what you create! Be sure you post them in the gallery so that I can oooooh and aaaaaah over them!

Thanks for coming by!
