Tips for the "Winter's Walk in Paris" Kit by Tara Orr

Hi Ladies!! This month the November kit features some pretty amazing papers - and pretty neato products.  Rather than focus on one particular tip I thought I'd take a few of my projects and offer tips on each one....

Ready?

Sorry, this photo is huge!!

1. Ok, I've had several comments about the 'stamped' edges of this layout... SUPER easy.  I have a really small circle punch from Stampin' Up.  All I did was go around the entire border and punched half of the circle. Upon completing I inked around the tips and it honestly does look like a die cut page.  Quick and simple.

2. Altering your fantastic paper is a little intimidating. You don't want to 'wreck' it (I actually did!)  Anyhow, I found that if you mist the paper, it gives a little more of a solid looking colour.  Mind you, I used 'brown' mist so it might look a little less severe if using lighter colours? I found that I prefered the 'inked' look much more.  I used distress inks rather than alcohol inks as I found they blend a little softer.  Start at the outside rim of your page and blend inwards using a circular motion with your blending tool.  If you concentrate more on a particular area it will result in a darker shade.  In addition, if you want to introduce a different colour (as I did) simply use the same technique as above. I actually used the yellow catseye inkpad directly on my page (and when mixed with the blue resulted in a gorgeous green) as I found the ink blender soaked up too much of the ink for this type (for the distress inks like Tim Holtz they seemed fine)?

3. Faux stitching.  I'm sure you've all tried?  I LOVE the look of stitching on pages.  I even went out and bought an inexpensive machine so that I could try this technique and I've yet to set it up.... too much of a hassle.  But, you can easily achieve a similar look with a journal pen (I prefer white stitching to darker, but both look fantastic - I've used both on my page above) and a paper piercer.  Simply go around with your paper piercer in whichever shape you would like to 'stitch'.  I normally just do around the borders of my projects or photos but you can do anything from a flourish, title, etc.  It may make it easier to draw in lightly with a pencil beforehand.  After you have poked all your holes, connect the dots with your journal pen and c'est tout!

4. If you find that your alphas are too punchy... ink them darker or paint them!

5. Add dimension to your projects!  I made simple fan flowers (as seen in previous cork tutorial) and used as a base for my hot air balloon tag.  It adds a unique dimension to the card that an otherwise card would lack.

More dimension is seen here where I've simply rolled the edges of my papers.  This is also a fantastic tip for revealing the reverse side of gorgeous double sided patterns of paper.

6. If you feel your project is missing something - add another layer!  I love adding  tons of 'stuff' to my projects.

7. Be resourceful/thrifty.  I loved the worn look of these papers by My Mind's Eye.  So much so that I kept the headers on each paper!  I simply inked around the edges and it almost looks like a die cut shape!  I added some twine (cheap) to complete the rustic feel of the page. With your bling flourishes, don't be affraid to alter them.  Cut them in half so you have 2!  I TOTALLY hacked this bling - so that it would fit on my card primarily, but I also wanted to use it on each side.

I hope that some of these tips will prove useful to you when you're designing your next page or project!  Happy Scrapping! ~TARA~

Please Welcome a New Design Team Member!

Scrap That! is thrilled to welcome Ivana Camdzic to our Design Team.  A fellow Canadian, Ivana is from Saskatoon, Sakatchewan (say that 10 times really fast!)
Ivana has a unique style and tremendous passion to bring to the team and we are so pleased to welcome her!  Be sure and stop by her blog: http://papergirlcrafts.blogspot.com
Hello fellow scrappers! My name is Ivana, and I am scrapbook FANATIC! I have been scrapping since I can remember picking up my first pair of scissors. It was not until 2004 that I started an interest in modern-day scrapbooking in an attempt to find a more creative way to preserve my memories. I fell in love with this art form the moment that I realized I could combine all of my passions (photography, sketching, painting, sewing, etc…) into one fabulous creation!

Shortly after I started scrapbooking, I was offered a position at our local scrapbook store. I worked there part-time while going to university. The workload of school got to be over-bearing and I had to say goodbye to my scrappy job. I think that was the most important thing that could have happened to me during my schooling. I realized just how much scrapbooking really meant to me. So, I obtained my business degree, with a major in accounting, and decided that for now, I would put that on hold, to follow my creative aspirations.

I went back to work for, design for, and teach classes at our local scrapbook store and I have now been there for almost a full year.  In the first little while, I taught a couple of classes to get the feel of teaching, and before long I was fully in love with the idea! So, I now teach an advance scrapbooking class every month to a bunch of wonderful, and incredibly talented gals! In addition to teaching and working, I create layouts for our other classes and I also create layouts for the store to display.

I find that I go in an out of phases of what I enjoy making...I sometimes create layouts, sometimes I switch it up and make cards, and then other times I choose to alter items. Whichever I may do, I generally stick to the same style. I love the shabby chic, romantic, and delicate look. You will often see me using soft colours and a LOT of texture! My favourite products are things I can make my own. I love using white ANYTHING which I can glimmer, glitter or alter. I love pearls, lace, soft and organic shapes, border punches, and my beloved liquid pearls! My style is very feminine, so I tend to use a lot of flowers and usually stay away from very masculine paper or embellishments. I draw my biggest inspirations from pretty paper, beautifully designed spaces and many other art forms like sculptures, fine china, antique packaging, beautifully decorated cakes, and clothing...just to mention a few!

I have only recently joined the online scrapbooking community and I love every bit of it! I am absolutely in love with the Scrap That! site and the idea of providing a high-quality, beautifully hand-picked and coordinated kits! I am so honoured and SO happy to have this opportunity to be a part of the INCREDIBLY talented Design Team! I look forward to working with the super friendly DT gals, the GORGEOUS kits, and to making wonderful friends along the way!

Fabulous Cork Tutorial!

Hi ladies (and any gents reading this as well!) Tara blogging today with a fantastic tutorial using cork.  Who would have thought that this great medium could be used for scrapping as well!?

The sheet included in the Scrap That! October Kit is perfectly thin enough to do just about anything you would want to do with a piece of paper.  I had so much fun experimenting with my cork and found the following cool uses:

As a matting behind a photo
Painted and used as a piece of background 'paper'
Stamped and cut out to use as an embellishment
Punched with any of your punches to create flowers, circles, etc
Punched with your border punches to create decorative trim

The possibilities are endless. I decided to take it one step further and see if I could create a 'fan flower' that everyone had been asking about in a few of my previous layouts.  Although a titch brittle when 'bent' the cork can be reinforced with a sheet of cardstock or patterned paper and transformed into a gorgeous fan flower as shown in my tutorial below.

Thanks so much for stopping by!! Have fun creating your 'cork' blooms!!!
