Kelly's Tutorial Videos with the July Kit

Hello everyone!

It's Kelly here to share some techniques from my July kit layouts.  I was so inspired by this kit, that I created two tutorial videos for you!

First, let's take a look at my vintage wedding layout and the techniques I used in my design.

On the reveal and blog hop day, I posted a video that showed a fast forward on how I designed this layout.  You can click HERE to see that video.
I created a tulle and pearl border around the heart
I scattered the tiny pearls for a 'confetti' effect.

I made a tulle flower base for the other kit blooms.
Here is a video that shows how I made this easy tulle flower:
You can also click HERE to watch it on YouTube.

My second layout with the July kit is also a vintage design, using a photo of my mother's cousin:
The small butterfly balloons are punched from the cork sheet with a Martha Stewart punch:
I glittered the edges and adhered black twine beneath each one.

The larger cork butterfly beneath the journaling strips is cut from a Sizzix die with my Big Shot.
I painted the kit leaves and glittered them too.

You can see that I cut the Pink Paislee journaling cards into frames and popped them up with 3D foam squares, then layered stamped vellum behind.

In the next video, you will see how I used the kit's Prima stamp and Smooch together to make this title as well...
You can click on the centre of the video to watch it now, or click HERE to watch it on YouTube.
Although this is my final blog post and video for the ScrapThat! Design Team, I will continue to make videos and blog tutorials on my own personal sites "Kelly Creates" and YouTube Channel.

I've really enjoyed being a part of the ScrapThat! Team, sharing my designs and techniques... and will continue to stop by here to be inspired!

Sandi's July Kit Creations .. the details

Hi, there! Sandi here today with my July Kit creations using the Scrap That! "Hope Chest" kit.  This kit was so "me" with all the warm earth tones. For this layout of my Dad, I chose a combination of one the more tropical looking papers (Dad served in the South Pacific) as well as the one with gorgeous cursive that reminded me of my Dad's own handwriting. I used a random Martha Stewart stencil at the top and then misted and dribbled with my Lindy's Stamp Gang "Grab a Guy Gold." Such a gorgeous color! The page is really built around the yummy mesh from the kit that felt nautical to me.

My punch work is a combination of a vintage Martha Stewart punch called Cherish Hearts and my MS double arches punch. Of course, my flowers were also punched using my McGill Star Lily punches and were based on Tracey G's tutorial found HERE. These got the LSG GGG misting as well as my crinkle ribbon. My Prima flowers were taken apart and then reassembled more to my liking. They got spritzed too! I loved the Maya Road pearl roses from the kit and altered them with Gesso, so that I could then paint them navy blue as a reminder to me of my Dad's Navy peacoat. I such a mush! I also had fun using the X's from the cork Thickers to give the illusion of lacing.

Here are some close-ups:

Next:

This Mixed Media on glass project is probably my favorite thing EVER! I seriously just keep staring at it! (Maybe because the photo is of my grown up baby girl, huh?) I was originally motivated by a piece created by Michelle Wilson "Madame Ro."  Her Asian Inspired Layout on Glass was inspired by Miranda Edney's glass project, so I credit them both! They both do such gorgeous work!

I posted a tutorial on July 2nd on the Scrap That! Chat blog describing exactly how this piece was created.  But for today let me share that it was created on an 8x10 piece of glass, stamped, embossed with UTEE, misted with Lindy's Stamp Gang mists and then embellished to the max! I just started adding embellies from this kit as well as from previous Scrap That! kits and a few items from my personal stash ... and I couldn't stop! LOL Most of my embellishments were glued in place using Beacon's 3 in1.  I have photographed my piece sitting on a plate rack so that you can get a little better view of all the yummy flowers (mostly Prima Sunrise, Sunset), Pink Paislee butterflies, scrabble tiles, Prima wood pin and such. The UTEE looks so "icey" ..  I just love it! Can't wait to share my close-ups. So fun to try something different!

Last but not least:

It seems that I always begin with the Main Kit only layout and usually follow Amy's sketch too if I can swing it because they are usually a match made in heaven.  I did substitute a square for the circle though.
These papers screamed vintage to me personally,  so I took the opportunity to scrap some photos of my parents. This photo is of my lovely mom and was one that my dad always carried in his wallet. It is the only copy that I have but using a myriad of photo editing software,  I have restored it fairly well.

I began my project with those fun flowers made largely from the Making Memories Mocha Paperie paper (swoon!!) along with my Tim Holtz Tattered Floral Die and my Donna Salazar Bitty Blossoms Die. I've used the cork paper as my base here for a fun touch. Then punched, stitched, distressed, layered and added a few last things from my own stash: the Blue Fern title, butterflies from the May Scrap That! kit and Zva pearls, a RAK from Lisa Gregory.  You'll see a few more Zva pearl swirls from her in my mixed media piece.  Thanks, Lisa!! I am so enjoying them!

The Wild Orchid flowers are tucked here and there .. I used my whole "bunch" on this one page! Lastly, I used the Cork Thickers to add my mom's nickname on the sweet banners added per the sketch.

That's it for today! I hope you were able to snag one of these gorgeous kits! It was fun, fun, fun!

Stitched Background Flowers and Distressed Alphas Tutorials by Natasha our July GD

Hi everyone!  Natasha here with a few tips and techniques that I used on my layout, "Love Your Butterfly Kisses".  First I'd like to show you how I created the stitched background flowers that add dimension and texture to my layout.

Stitched Background Flowers

STEP 1: Use your favorite flower dies or punches to cut flowers from the adhesive-backed cork sheet.

STEP 2: "Distress" the cork flower cut-outs by dabbing white ink onto the top of the flowers and brown ink onto the edges.

STEP 3: Remove the backing from the cork cut-outs and adhere onto your layout.  Poke holes around the edges of the flower.

STEP 4: Stitch the holes using embroidery floss to create a textured border.

Next I would like to share a quick tip on how to distress the awesome cork alphas that come in this month's kit.

Distressed Alphas

STEP 1: Stick your title letters onto a sheet of paper or a craft sheet.

STEP 2: Gently scrape the top surface of the alphas with an emery board, metal file or similar tool.

STEP 3: Dab white pigment ink onto the distressed alphas.

STEP 4: Spritz with water to allow the white ink to soak into the alphas. Dry with a heat tool and add a little brown ink to the edges.

I hope you find these tips useful!  Thanks for stopping by today!
Much love & hugs,

Altering some of the July ScrapThat! kit elements!

Hi everyone Laura here!  I loved this months kit, but it just wouldn't be me if I didn't alter some things just a bit!

I wanted to make the felt a little less vibrant so I used a technique I do quite often.

you will need a zip tight baggie
mist
and your felt

spray some mist in the bag....
add your felt

squish it around until you have used up all the mist
you may wish to add more mist to make the felt darker

lay your felt out to dry!

I did the same technique using a green mist with the tulle!

To alter the flowers just a bit I used a makeup sponge and my brown ink pad and inked the edges of the flower to give it a more distressed look!

Then I took the green smooch and added a bit more drama to the edges!

voila!

I also sprayed the leaves with a bit of gold mist!

and using a piece of paper I sprayed the end of the butterflies wings

I didn't want the pearls quite so white for the layout I was working on so...
I used the smooch on them.
I didn't want them dark either, so before the smooch was dry I rubbed a bit off using a paper towel

and this is what I got!

and here is the finished layout!

July Featured Kit Projects by Tracey S.

It's Tracey S. here with my July Kit Projects.

This gorgeous July Kit is now available for purchase by nonsubscribers in our ScrapThat! Store.

I hope you are having a lovely and fun summer.

This first LO features a photo of our daughter, Elizabeth, on her wedding day.

"Beautiful Bride"
MK, EAO, FAO

Close-Ups:
I white washed the kit paper by thinning down some gesso with water and brushing it across the page. I then added paint rings, grid stamps and paint splatter.

Kit tulle is tucked into my clusters for a subtle reference to the beautiful veil in the photo.

The Prima flowers from the FAO Kit were texture pasted, painted, inked and misted. I also white washed the canvas butterflies in the EAO Kit. I removed some of the flower centers and replaced them with the gorgeous resin roses from the EAO Kit, then tucked the little removed centers into my clusters.

I added a key from Craftpon.com and DA chipboard from my stash. The alpha is from a previous ScrapThat! kit.

White washing on the kit leaves along with some more mixed media on the background with the puffy hearts using one of Donna Salazar's new stencils.

This Prima flower and MK cherry blossom took the mixed media treatment so beautifully! The leaf is a sweet trinket from the Craftpon.com Etsy store.

This next layout features another wedding photo, Elizabeth and Andrew's wedding rings laid on 1 Corinthans 13 - the love chapter.

"A Symbol of Our Love"
MK, EAO, FAO

Close-Ups:
A little gesso dry brushed on the FAO Prima Flowers to lighten them up. The little bundles of roses in the main kit vary in color and mine were yellow, so I painted them with gesso and then misted with a golden brown glimmer mist. They are such a gorgeous touch mixed into the clusters.

More flowers.

I selected the interlocking circle stencil from Prima for my background to represent the rings in the photo.

I save every little bit and piece from the kit. These vine tendrils are the wires I cut off of some of the kit flowers. I curled them around a thin paint brush and then shaped. You can see here how I water distressed and crinkled my mat and page edges.

I heat embossed the kit letters for part of my title and the smaller letters are an alpha from a previous ScrapThat! Kit.

I punched the corner here and placed kit pearls that I had colored in the center of each punched flower. Isn't this EAO kit butterfly just so charming?

A dressed up DA piece from my stash and more of the interlocking rings below.

My final page showcases an engagement photo of our son, Joseph, and his bride, Rachel. Joseph convinced her to take some photos in this train at the park and that was the beginning of a journey of a lifetime!!

"Journey of a Lifetime"
MK
Close-Ups:
To pull in the pink from Rachel's top, I used kit paper along with Heartfelt Creations stamps and dies to created the larger focal flowers. I also altered the main kit cherry blossoms and roses to coordinate.

I cut, distressed, and crinkled the banner flags from kit paper. I also added some snippets of ribbon.

I used the Main Kit Mesh with gesso to "stamp" the bottom of my page.

I just love the cork alpha set in the main kit. It is so perfect with these papers. I also fussy cut flowers and leaves to tuck around my photo. The other part of my title in the opposite corner is some of the kit cork die cut into letters.

I created this Shimmer Tile from the scrabble tile and sweet Prima stamp included in the MK. My tutorial can be found here.
I stenciled some sparkly mixed media onto the background.
Thanks for visiting with me through my July Kit pages. You are going to enjoy this kit. If you are not a subscriber, you can purchase the July Kit at our ScrapThat! Store.
