Tips and Techniques

Keren here wanting to share some tips on some of the techniques I used for my layouts this month.

Tip #1: Save your packaging

I know that as scrappers we tend to save every scrap of paper so why not save the packaging too. Many companies nowadays are going green and have beautiful packaged papers that you can use in your work. Some of these companies are Prima, Zva, and of course Webster's Pages.

I used my Zva flower packaging here to layer behind my daughter's photo because the green matched the layout. Then I was able to use this area for the title.

Tip #2: Fussy Cutting

You often see a paper you love but its too busy and you are stumped not knowing how to use it. Don't shy away from fussy cutting. I love cutting around images and using them in many different places on the layout.

Here I cut these beautiful cherry blossoms, a bird cage and a bird. Then I added them as layers in my layout.

I used pop-dots to give the images some dimension which leads me to...

Tip # 3: Use Pop-dots

I love using Pop-dots on my layouts because they add dimension to my layers. The layouts tend to be very bulky in your albums but they look so beautiful when you photograph them.

Here is my layout demonstrating Tip #2 and #3

I hope these Tips inspired you today!!

Helen's Tutorial

Hi everyone!
Helen here with a few TIPS & TRICKS to share!!
1) If you are anything like me you just LOVE flowers and wish you had more of them!
Without actually having to BUY them or spend HOURS making them - well I have a way!
See what I did here?
Yup I actually CUT the Sea Foam flower from the main kit in HALF
so now it looks like I have TWO!!
I have a few other things to share with you about my layout construction process.
I do hope you find this information useful.
If you decide to use any of these ideas
I would love for you to post what you did under my Tutorial thread in the forum HERE.
2) If you see a sketch that calls for a scalloped/die-cut paper
don't feel like you HAVE to use one that is pre-cut. When you have
a piece of this type of paper in your stash, before adhering it to your
background paper, trace around it, cut and save it as a template,
then you will be able to use ANY paper you like and simply cut it
to shape as I have done above!
3) You see I cut that pretty carefully hey?
Reason being that I don't waste AT ALL!
Any teeny piece of paper can be used for something so I strongly encourage you to hang onto your scraps and place them in a small bag back together with the rest of your kit contents.
Often little bits can be punched into small shapes like butterflies for example.
4) See the yellow identification strip along the top of this paper?
I have used that on my layout!
(Scroll back up to spot it)
Told you I didn't waste a thing!!
5) If you want to go "Modern Shabby" - which is a phrase I've coined myself for my own
personal style {shabby but clean, with white space and strong saturated color}
then you need to be brave and choose vibrant paper.
Of course you only need a bit of it so here I have laid the bright pink BEHIND
the scalloped paper - just the right amount of KAPOW factor!!
6) "Audition" your elements.
Lay down the backing paper you have just made by adhering
your newly cut scalloped paper to a nice bright but subtle (in design) print.
Now go through your kit placing the elements you THINK you will probably use
on your layout on your page and start shifting things around until you are
happy with the way they look.
NO ADHERING AT THIS STAGE!

7) Use your packaging!
Look in the photo above and you'll see that I have used
the white with green print packaging from the flower pack -
it's there under my tickets and if you scroll up to my finished layout
you will see that it ended up to the left AND right of my photo!
How did I do that?
8) Well I cut it down the middle to give me 2 pieces so merely
created the ILLUSION of a much bigger piece of paper.
More on that further down!
9) Can't afford fancy tape runners?
No problem! Neither can I!!
I just buy the good quality double-sided tape
(the cheap stuff is terrible as the backing doesn't peel of f easily and
this is essential if you need to work fast like me)
Now lay it down around all the curves of your scalloped paper,
bending as you go, don't worry about it,
when you peel off your tape those folds will flatten out and
be totally unnoticeable from the front.

10. Ink your edges.
This transforms your style from MODERN to MODERN SHABBY!
Inking is not used a lot by modern scrappers (the clean and simple sort)
but is essential to add the depth required for a truly shabby layout.
My favorite colors are Toffee, Chestnut Roan, Creamy Brown and Dark Brown,
all cat's eyes inks by Color Box and cheap and easily available.
11. STRETCH your paper!
Create the ILLUSION of a long strip of paper by measuring how much of the paper
you want to have showing at the top and bottom (or on each side) of your photographs/
other papers, then cut that amount PLUS an extra inch for tucking under.
NOW cut that piece into 2 pieces according to your measurements.
One for the top and one for bottom (or each side).
Now each piece will have a HALF INCH for tucking under.
This way you are GUARANTEED that both pieces will be exactly the same
width and your illusion will be completely believable!
I have done exactly that with the Cherry Blossom paper above and below
the photograph above.
I do hope you have found my TIPS & TRICKS useful!

Jenifer's May Tutorial

Hi there,
Jenifer here today posting for Scrap That!
I have a quick lil tutorial using the
Scrap That May Anniversary kit
I wanna share with you!!

When I was creating my kit I found that I absolutely adored the Say It In Pearls Adhesive Border

However it's color did not match the project I really wanted to use it for. So I decided I would use some acrylic paint to alter it along with a few of the alphas from the kit for my title and my 3-D roses I made with the polymer clay.

SUPPLIES
Item's you'd like to paint (I am painting my 3-D polymer clay roses as well as a few alphas from the kit and my say it in pearls adhesive border)

paint brush

acrylic paint in your choice of color(s)

You may consider a few paper towels and something to paint on so you do not get it on your work space, I just use disposable plates.

STEP 1
Lightly coat your pearl adhesive border with a touch of your acrylic paint.....it doesn't take much, if you put to much the paint will fill in the negative spaces of the details and you will no longer be able to see it the design. Also I found when painting the actual pearls, it;s easier to paint over them once and leave them to dry, if you can still see the previous color once the first coat has dried, you can add another coat.

Set aside to dry before use.

**TIP**
I only needed half of this border for my project so I only painted the half I needed and cut it in half for my layout instead of wasting it behind the photo. I saved the unpainted half for later use.

STEP 2
I like to cut my alphas out leaving them still attached to the clear film before I paint them, that way I do not get unwanted paint on the other alpha's by leaving them on the sheet...nor do I loose the stickiness due to removing them from the film.
Before painting the alphas you want to be sure and remove any centers that will not be part of your title before you start. For example: the circle from the e's  a's or b's ect.
If you do not remove these before painting the center edges will not get painted and will remain the original color.

Depending on the color you choose to paint your alpha's they may need more than 1 coat of paint. Just like above, you need to let the first coat dry before you add another.

**TIP**
When your letters are all dry and you are ready to remove them from the clear film for use on your project, you may find that there is excess dried paint on the edges or maybe in the center holes where you previously removed unwated pieces. VERY gently pinch the edges off using you finger nails and for the centers I find a circular motion a few times with a straight pin works well.

STEP 3
BEFORE

These are the 3-D roses I made using the polymer clay from the kit. (they are MUCH easier than they look)
Anyhow this is what they looked like after baking, and I thought they'd work PERFECT for the project I was creating, so why not paint them too?!?!

AFTER

I left them blotchy looking on purpose to give them somewhat of a dimensional look, because I have not mastered any kind of fancy paint techniques as far as shading goes......

Once I added them to my Layout I decided I should add some purple stickles....

FINISHED PRODUCT USING ALL MY PAINTED GOODIES!!

I hope you have enjoyed my lil tutorials, and are inspired to create something beautiful of your own possibly using an idea I have shared with you all today.

Thanks for stopping by, check back next week to see what else our designers have to share with you!
